At this year’s Vinitaly event, we found ourselves in the heart of Alto Adige, a remarkable land that will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its designation as a wine-producing region in 2025.

At the Verona International Wine Fair, we had a conversation with Andreas Kofler, President of the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige:

– Mr. President, let’s begin with this important milestone: what does this 50-year anniversary mean for your region?

– “These fifty years have been crucial. During this time, we’ve witnessed profound changes: from a region known for large-scale production, particularly of Schiava wines, we gradually shifted toward quality-focused viticulture with a rich variety of grape types. Today, we boast high-altitude zones ideal for white wines and warmer areas where excellent reds are grown. It has been a long journey, but today we can proudly say that the region has made significant progress.”

– What were the key turning points in this evolution?

– “It all began in 1975, when limits on grape yields were introduced for the first time. That was a pivotal step towards quality. Then came some courageous pioneers who believed in matching the right grape varieties to each specific area. This approach has come to define who we are today: a region committed to excellence, both in white and red wines.”

– Beyond wine, wine and gastronomy tourism has also become central to Alto Adige.

– “Absolutely. For decades, we’ve been dedicated to wine tourism: wineries have been renovated or rebuilt to offer unique visiting experiences. Tourists can enjoy guided tastings, explore vineyards, and even cycle through breathtaking landscapes. This is not an easy region for viticulture—just look at the steep slopes—but precisely for that reason, it’s all the more captivating and authentic.”

– What would you say is the most representative wine today, especially considering the export market?

– “Our greatest strength lies in our ability to produce elegant, fresh wines that embody mountain character. These wines are incredibly versatile—perfect both as an aperitif and with meals. Our white wines—such as Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc—are adaptable to a wide range of occasions and palates.”

– “For our Chinese friends, especially those following us through the Wine Channel in China, these wines pair beautifully with Chinese cuisine: their freshness, minerality, and elegance make them an ideal m

atch for complex and layered flavors.”

– One final question, Mr. President: regarding the newly approved UGAs (Additional Geographical Units). What do they mean for your region?

– “The UGAs represent the latest milestone in our development. They will officially take effect with the 2024 vintage and will allow us to more clearly identify the origins of each wine. Every bottle will feature a graphical symbol next to its name, representing the geographical unit it comes from. This will help differentiate wines with a specific place-name designation from those without. It’s an important step forward in strengthening the link between wine and its terroir.”
