In Argentina, it is possible to find vineyards at some of the highest altitudes in the world, even up to 3000 meters above sea level, nestled against the Andes or in the plains of Patagonia, all the way to the edges of the Atlantic Ocean. This is why Argentine wines offer an infinite range of flavors that reflect the identity of each region. The great variety of the territory therefore offers wines of the highest oenological quality, each with a distinctive character and profile.
At the heart of Argentine wine production lies the region of Mendoza, where some of Argentina’s most extraordinary and distinctive wines are born. Malbec, in particular, has gained international fame as the iconic grape variety, with wines that show a rich depth of black fruit, spices, and structural complexity.
Other regions boast high-quality production as well. The Salta region, with its vineyards located at extreme altitudes, produces aromatic wines of remarkable freshness, while in Patagonia, fragrant fruity floral aromas can be found from grapes such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. La Rioja (not to be confused with the one in Spain), even further north, cultivates the most popular white grape variety, Torrontés, and represents the oldest wine region in the country, while in Cafayate, land of great reds, one of the highest vineyards in the world can be found.
Interview with Magdalena Pesce CEO Wines of Argentina
From Buenos Aires to Mendoza, from the valleys of Patagonia to the province of Salta, Argentina offers an incredible variety of terroirs and grapes, reflected in the unique and fascinating wines that characterize this extraordinary land. Like the ones tasted together with Magdalena on the occasion of Wine Paris.
Please tell us about the diverse regions in Argentina.
The diversity is immense. We have the west area with the Andes mountains, then the coast with the Atlantic influence, which is new grape planting area in Argentina. In the south, there’s Patagonia, and in the north, we have the highest vineyards in the world. It’s a vast country with a lot of things to discover.
Where are Argentina wines primarily sold? Which are your main markets?
Our main markets are the US, Brazil, and we’re also growing our presence in Europe. We sell a lot of wine in the UK as well. Additionally, we’re exploring other markets like France, Italy, Poland, Spain.
Do you have any interest about Chinese market?
Yes, of course everybody is interested in China, so we are really hoping that this market starts with all the energy as it used to be and well, we will have a good business there.
Magdalena, please, I would like to try something now.
Sure, I’d love to. You know, Argentina is famous for its Malbec, but today I’d like to introduce something different. If you don’t mind, we can try this sparkling wine from a boutique company that uses traditional methods. The labels are also really unique.
Now we are tasting Garnacha and this we’re tasting is quite nice and special because this Garnacha is from the north of Argentina, in the province of Salta, in a valley called Cafayate. It’s a high-altitude wine, and they’re starting to use organic methods for production. So we are very happy with all these products that Argentina producing right now, as sustainability is very important to us, is one of the pilar od Wines of Argentina work and many producers are creating this beautiful wine and adopting these practices.
