The weekly review of news on Italian wine for the Chinese market!
We anticipated it in the last episode, and now it has officially begun: the 2021 harvest has started throughout Italy with the harvest of the first bunch of grapes. The first bunch was harvested in the “Dei Principi di Spadafora” farm in Sicily, and marks the beginning of the harvest along the Peninsula with the harvest of the white Chardonnay grapes. The harvest, according to Coldiretti, starts with good conditions in the vineyard in the south, marked by high temperatures, while in the north the effects of spring frosts and hail that hit limited and limited areas returned.
We move to Tuscany, where Francesco Mazzei has been re-elected president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana for a second term. Florentine, 62, Mazzei is CEO of Marchesi Mazzei spa, which counts among its companies the Belguardo Estate in the Tuscan Maremma and is also president of Avito, an association that brings together 22 Tuscan wine consortia. The reconfirmed president declared: “In a three-year period where the pandemic has hindered the activities, encouraging results have nevertheless been obtained regarding the notoriety and appreciation of the Denomination”.
Organic is advancing in the wine production chain: in Italy, in 2020, 4 out of 100 bottles of wine are organic, but the phenomenon is growing rapidly all over the world both in terms of extension of the vineyard areas and of interest of the increasingly attentive consumer the impact of food production on the environment. To photograph the trends and structural dimension of the sector, with particular reference to the Italian context, is the report “The organic wine chain”, the latest issue of a thematic series dedicated to the world of bio promoted by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and produced by Ismea in collaboration with CIHEAM-Bari, as part of the activities of the National Information System on Organic Agriculture (SINAB).
The analysis by Anna Di Martino, a prestigious firm in the economy and wine, for the “Corriere Economia”, reveals who are the greats of Italian wine, the 106 companies that, together, are worth 62% of the turnover of the sector. These companies close 2020 with a decline in turnover of 3.2%, in line with the negative trend of 2020 in the wine world. One of the most interesting data is that on the profitability of Italian wineries in 2020: among the private ones, Tenuta San Guido, symbol of Bolgheri and home of Sassicaia, Marchesi Antinori, led by the Antinori family together with Renzo Cotarella, and Marchesi Frescobaldi (with Ornellaia and Masseto), the other historic label of Tuscany wine.
That’s all for today, thanks for joining us and see you next week!
