The weekly review of news on Italian wine for the Chinese market!
We open with the rise of Made in Italy wine which expects to close 2021 with an increase of 9% with a turnover of about 11 billion euros, keeping the second place intact in the global ranking of the major exporting countries. This is what emerges from the ongoing National Winemaking Forum 2021, promoted by Cia-Agricoltori Italiani in collaboration with Unione Italiana Vini. This was after the year of the pandemic, which cost the sector 3 billion for an average drop in turnover of 15%. Especially good is the e-commerce that collects + 75%.
Starting from August 6, the Green Pass – which certifies vaccination, negativity or recovery from Covid-19 in the last six months – will be mandatory to carry out the vast majority of activities, including sitting at a table in a bar or restaurant. , as imposed by the decree signed by Premier Mario Draghi. The reactions of the wine sector are negative, fearing a backlash: Fipe / Confcommercio declares it a “hasty rule that will not bring expected effects”, even harder is the reaction of Filiera Italia, an alliance within which there are also Donnafugata and Marchesi Antinori, which gives an “absolutely negative” judgment.
Let’s now pass to the two most famous Italian sparkling wines, both of which beat all records!
Record Prosecco in 2021. Never have so many bottles of Venetian bubbles been uncorked in the world as in this year, which records a record increase in exports of 17 percent. This is what emerges from the Coldiretti analysis based on Istat data relating to the first quarter of 2021 in which over 120 million bottles were shipped abroad. “An overwhelming growth that ranks Prosecco by far as the most exported wine in the world with about 1/3 of the bubbles, followed by Cava (14%) and Champagne (11%)”, underlined Coldiretti.
Franciacorta is also a record in the first half of 2021, one of the most important areas of Italian sparkling wine, which has experienced a semester of important recovery, with sales that if they obviously outclassed the 2020 data, have also surpassed 2019, with a growth of + 12% over the first half of the last pre-pandemic year, and an average price that went from 21 euros per bottle, in retail, in 2019, to 22.5 in 2021. A powerful and comforting recovery, with growth of even + 200% in April and May 2021 over the same months of 2020, according to the Economic Observatory of the Franciacorta Consortium, led by Silvano Brescianini. And things are also going well for exports, which, for Franciacorta, are worth 13.5% of sales.
